Road-weary Pioneers fall to UWRF

December 13, 2008

UW-Platteville concluded its brutal women's basketball first-semester schedule with a 78-55 loss at UW-River Falls Saturday.

The Pioneers, who played eight of their first nine on the road with no trip shorter than three hours, finished the first semester 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Falcons improved to 7-2, 2-1.

Tiffany Gregorich came off the bench to pour in 29 points for UWRF, hitting 11 of 14 shots. Reserve Maranda Dahm added 11 points, while starters Tess Lardie and Alise Holst each had 10.

The Pioneers trailed 44-28 at the half, but scored eight of the first nine points of the second half, drawing within 45-36. Two Jenna Hanson free throws and three straight Gregorich baskets pushed the margin back to 17 points. The Pioneers came no closer the rest of the way.

Lisa Grantman was the lone double figure scorer with 10 for UWP, who made round-trips to Superior, Eau Claire and River Falls in an eight-day span. Charity Stotmeister and Stacia Nemitz each added nine points.

After taking a finals break, the Pioneers return to the road, but for a much, much shorter trip. UW-Platteville plays at the Clarke College tournament Dec. 30-31 in nearby Dubuque. UWP opens with Mount Mercy at 5 p.m. Dec. 30, then faces either Clarke or Illinois Tech on New Year's Eve.
