Huge comeback falls short

November 24, 2007

UW-Platteville used a 21-0 run to slice a 24-point deficit to three, but could not get over the final hump in a 73-62 loss to Davenport, Mich. Saturday night in the Cardinal Stritch tournament.

Davenport, who has had three straight 20-win seasons, led 42-21 at the half and was ahead 49-25 before the Pioneers started their improbable run.

The Pioneers scored the game's next 21 points over seven minutes. Lisa Wubben had 10 points during the run, which ended with Lisa Grantman's three-point basket with 8:33 to play, making the score 49-46.

The Panthers' Kristi Boehm scored a layup at the 8:15 mark, and Jeanette Woodberry scored the next five points, giving the Michigan squad a 56-46 advantage. UWP never came closer than that.

Wubben led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Grantman had 12 points and seven rebounds. UWP hit just 19 of 80 shots from the field (24 percent), but grabbed 28 offensive rebounds. Druscilla Schneider grabbed 11 rebounds, while Conny Droeszler had seven points and seven boards.

Woodberry, an NAIA first team all-American last year, had 21 points for the 5-0 Panthers.

The 1-3 Pioneers will play Temple Baptist, Ohio Sunday in the consolation game in Milwaukee. Cardinal Stritch beat Temple Baptist 79-32 in the other first round game.
