Titans Take Rematch
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - UW-Platteville women's basketball falls to 1-1 with 81-64 loss to Oshkosh.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team exacted some revenge against UW-Platteville on Friday night with an 81-64 victory over the Pioneers. The win avenges a 74-68 loss at the hands of the Pioneers two days earlier when the two teams played in Oshkosh. Both squads' records now stand at 1-1.
The Titans came out of the gates hot, jumping out to a 10-2 lead 4:00 into the contest. That early 8-point advantage topped Oshkosh's biggest lead of seven in the first meeting. The visitors would go up by 11 before a quick 5-0 spurt by the Pioneers brought them to within six, 18-12. However, that is as close as Platteville would get the remainder of the evening. Oshkosh answered with a jumper from Jenna Jorgenson and two free throws from Kennedy Osterman to end the quarter extending their lead to 22-12.
Oshkosh would build to lead by as many as 18 in the 2nd quarter thanks to some hot shooting. The Titans made 58% of their shots from the floor in the quarter including 3-5 from three-point range. Oshkosh headed into the halftime locker room with a 41-26 advantage.
The defending conference champions ended the Pioneers' hopes for a comeback early in the 3rd quarter. Scoring the first seven points out of the break, Oshkosh went on a 14-2 run to go up 55-28 and were never seriously challenged the rest of the way. Osterman led the victors in scoring with 15. Julia Silloway and Karsyn Rueth each chipped in 12.
The Pioneers were led in scoring by Maiah Domask (Sr. / Waupun, Wis.). The returning 1st team, All-WIAC forward led all scorers with 22 points on 7-14 shooting including 3-4 on three-point attempts.
Both teams shot 50% or better from long range with the Titans going 11-22 from deep while the Pioneers connected on 10 of their 18 three-point attempts. The difference on the night proved to be a disruptive full court defense displayed by Oshkosh, which led to 19 Pioneer turnovers. The Titans were able to convert those miscues into 24 points compared to only eight points off turnovers for the hosts.
The Pioneers will get a few days off before beginning a two-game set with UW-Stevens Point. The first game between the WIAC rivals will take place at Williams Fieldhouse on Wednesday night, February 10th at 7p. The two will then face off again next Friday, February 12th, at Stevens Point.
