No. 12 UW-Stevens Point built a 47-17 halftime advantage on the strength of a 20-4 advantage in points in the paint en route to an 84-53 win over host UW-Platteville on Wednesday night at Bo Ryan Court.
The Pointers (18-3, 10-2) were led by Sam Barber, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds to pace three players in double figures. She was joined by Cassie Bandow and Taylor Buhr, who each had 15 points.
The Pioneers (8-13, 4-8) was paced by Kim Wellnitz and Liz Lawinger, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Barber had 13 of her points and all 10 of her rebounds in the first half to lead UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers held the PIoneers off the scoreboard over the final 5:34 of the first half for a 47-17 halftime lead.
UW-Platteville scored 10 of the first 11 points of the first half to cut the deficit to 19. Four-different Pioneers contributed to the spurt including a banked-in 3 pointer by Jordan Johnson. Twice more, the Pioneers were able to lower the lead to 19 but no closer down the stretch. The Pioneers nearly outscored the Pointers in the final 20 minutes, 37-36.
Next, the Pioneers will honor senior Ashley Mulholland in the final home game of the 2011-12 season when they host UW-Stout at Bo Ryan Court at 4 p.m.
