Pioneers open 2019 outdoor track and field season at Washington University
St. Louis, Mo. – In the first outdoor track and field meet of the season, the UW-Platteville track and field team traveled to Washington University to compete Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30.
St. Louis, Mo. – In the first outdoor track and field meet of the season, the UW-Platteville track and field team traveled to Washington University to compete Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30. Through adverse conditions, including dropping temperatures, high winds, and rain, the Pioneers completed the first marks of the 2019 outdoor season.
The distance carnival and hammer throw was contested on Friday, followed by the continuation of events on Saturday.
In the 5,000m run, six men from the UW-Platteville track and field team competed. Senior Nolan Wallenkamp ran 14:58.75 in his first collegiate 5,000m race. Alex Clark ran 15:41.09, Grant Munson ran 16:06.01, and Nick Hein ran 16:23.93. Clocking a personal best time, Ben Claas ran 16:50.99. Nathan Taylor finished in 18:08.51.
Four Pioneer women ran in the 5,000m run. Anna Drazkowski ran a time of 21:09.09. Haley Daniels finished in 21:48.24, Claudia De Valk finished in 22:51.01, and Mackenzie Parrell finished in 23:40.33.
In the 10,000m run, Zach Lee finished his first collegiate 10,000m race in 31:21.00. Zach Klokow, also competing in the event for the first time, ran 31:40.36. Logan Steinhoff finished in 32:12.48 and Kyle Herbrand finished in 32:48.02. For the women's 10,000m run, running personal best times, Katie Wardinski ran 37:42.92 and Brenna Kautz ran 42.18.16.
In the women's hammer throw, Rachel Beuthin threw 41.18m (135-1). Murphy Bleymeyer threw a personal best of 39.75m (130-5). Jackie Bergschultz threw 36.94m (121-2). In the men's hammer throw, Ty Oster took sixth place with a throw of 45.04m (147-9). Cole Eastlick threw 44.17m (144-11), and Alex Girard threw 42.84m (140-7). Branden Drews came in close behind, throwing 42.44m (139-3).
On Saturday, in the 100m hurdles, Katie Schilling placed third with a time of 15.66 seconds. Casey Rielly was seventh with 16.99 seconds. Schilling also ran in the women's 400m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 1:09.84. In the 110m hurdles, Charlie Gifford ran for second with a time of 15.22, followed by Matt Hokanson and Sean Komro who ran 15.45 and 15.46 respectively. Hokanson later won the men's 400m hurdles, running 56.05 seconds.
Sophomore Gwen Orr ran 13.00 seconds in the 100m dash, followed by Haley Ott, who ran 13.13 seconds, and Chenoa Stuhr who finished the race in 13.22 seconds. In the men's 100m dash, junior Ryan Swanson ran 11.47 seconds. Zach Frei finished the race in 11.48.
Orr competed for second place in the women's 200m dash, finishing in 26.58 seconds. Stuhr ran 27.07, Ott ran 27.29, and Kat Holter ran 27.39 seconds. In the men's 200m dash, Gifford was clocked crossing the finish line in 23.36.
Sydney Soderback and Madi Shafer ran in the women's 400m dash. Soderback ran 1:06.20 and Shafer ran 1:07.37. In the men's 400m dash, Jacob Downing ran 54.71 and John Huntley ran 54.88.
Johanna Meister took fifth in the women's 1500m run with a time of 4:56.71. Caitlyn Ifft ran 5:10.54, and Kirstie Ramsey ran 5:16.85. In the men's 1500m, freshman Paul King ran 4:29.90. Alex Wittmerhaus ran in the men's 800m run with a time of 2:05.67.
In the javelin, Brianna Hall threw 31.36m (102-11). Gwen Orr debuted in the event and threw 28.16m (92-5). Cassandra Meyer threw 26.49m (86-11), Madi Shafer threw 24.29m (79-8), and Kat Holter threw 18.72m (61-5). In the men's javelin, Jacob Rice won the event throwing a personal best of 51.59m (169-3). Tyler Bacon threw 39.88m (130-10), and Girard threw 34.48m (113-1).
Hall won the women's shot put, throwing 10.79m (35-5). Beuthin came in second place with 10.37m (34-0.25). Bleymeyer took third place with 9.66m (31-8.5). In the men's shot put, Eastlick threw 13.19m (43-3.25), Veverka 12.84m (42-1.5), and both Girard and Drews both threw 12.05m (39.6.5).
In the women's discus, Beuthin threw 34.00m (111-6). Bleymeyer threw 31.95m (104-10) and Hall completed a throw measuring 31.33m (102-9). In the men's discus, Walechka took second place with a throw of 43.71m (143.5). Girard was fourth with a throw of 42.27m (138-8), and Oster threw 40.16m (131-9).
Sophomore Lexie Stevens jumped 1.40m (4-7) and tied for third place in the women's high jump. Meyer took eighth place with a jump of 1.35m (4-5). Men's high jump was not contested due to worsening weather conditions.
In the men's pole vault, Greg Vogt vaulted 4.10m (13-5.25) and Jordan Monroe completed a vault measuring 3.80m (12-5.5). Women's pole vault was not contested, also due to worsening weather conditions.
In the long jump, Holter contested the event for the first time jumping 3.97m (13-00.25). Drew Stanioch jumped 6.10m (20-00.25) in the men's long jump for second place.
The Pioneers will travel the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse next weekend on Saturday, April 6 to compete in the Ashton May Invitational.
