Thursday night, Ian LaMere will be among the nation's elite runners that will toe the line at the USATF Outdoor Track Championships.
LaMere will compete in the 10,000m against the nation's best distance runners. Leading the field heading into tonight's race will be American record holder Galen Rupp. Rupp has won the event the previous eight years along with earning the silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in the event.
LaMere's time ranks him 15th out of the field of 24 runners. LaMere's seed time of 28:38.63 was set last year at the Stanford Invitational as he broke the NCAA Division III national record. His 10,000m time was the fastest for an American under 23 years of age in 2016. Last month LaMere became the first runner in NCAA Division III history to win the national championship in the 10,000m three years in a row.
The USATF Championships are the culminating championships for Americans. This year's championships are being held in Sacramento, California and will serve as the qualifier for the IAAF World Championships held in London, England this August. The top-3 runners of tonight's race that have met the 27:45 qualifying standard will represent Team USA at the World Championships.
Due to heat conditions the race start time has been moved back an hour and is now scheduled to start at 10:05pm local time (12:09am CST). Live streaming will be available with subscription only.
