Two Championship Records Broken on WIAC Day 1
Amber Williams and Ian LaMere both broke meet records on day one of the WIAC Championships.
Platteville, Wis. – Amber Williams and Ian LaMere both broke meet records on day one of the WIAC Championships.
Amber Williams broke her own Championship record with a jump of 6.09m (19-11.75). Williams had broken her 5.97m record on her third jump with a leap of 6.06m but went on to improve on it in the final round of jumps. The jump also broke her own facility and school record. Williams also won her heat in the 100m hurdles to move on to Saturday's final.
Ian LaMere ran away from the field early on and chased after the Championship record in the 10,000m. LaMere lapped the field twice on his way to a 29:48.39 finish. The previous record was held by Tom Moris of Stevens Point with a time of 30:13.26. LaMere also broke former Platteville standout Nathan Petesch's facility record of 30:41.65. Teammate Walker Rynes finished second with a time of 32:28.75. Logan Steinhoff hung on to eight with his 32:57.33 finish. On the women's side Katie Wardinski finished seventh with a time of 39:36.62.
Briana Iwans advanced to the finals in the 400m with a personal best of 58.98. On the men's side Wyatt Thompson and Alec Burcham advanced running 49.29 and 49.39 respectively.
Zach Lee ran a two and half second personal best in the 800m to win his preliminary heat and advance to Saturday's final. His time of 1:52.16 is currently the 15th best time in Division III this season. In the women's 800m Devan Montgomery ran a personal best to advance in the 800m with a time of 2:15.74.
In the 110m hurdles Charlie Gifford advanced to the finals with a non-wind aided personal best of 15.17. Matt Hokanson advanced in the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 55.73.
Brittany Ehlen finished fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.44m (11-3.5). Mark Senst finished eigth in the hammer throw with a toss of 50.20m (164-08). Krysta Parson finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 33.66m (110-05).
Parson is also competing in the heptathlon and currently sits in sixth after day one. Megan Marotz sits in second place after day one fo the heptathlon. Cody Faust is currently in second place after day one of the decathlon.
Action resumes Saturday at 10am with the Decathlon 110m hurdles.
