UW-Platteville Men lead after day 1 of WIAC Championships
Records fall as multiple Champions were crowned on Day 1 of the WIAC Championships. The No. 6 nationally ranked men finished the day leading with 51 points, ahead of No. 4 ranked La Crosse’s 45.5 points.

Dan Arnold broke the WIAC Championship record during the preliminary heats of the 110m Hurdles. Arnold finished in 14.21 besting the old record by 6 hundredths of a second. Arnold heads into tomorrow's finals as the clear favorite.
A new school record in the men's pole vault was set as the Pioneers took the top two spots in the event. Garrett Riggs was the first to clear 16-3.25 (4.96m) to break Matt Dwyer's two week old school record. Dwyer went on to clear the height and match the record. Dwyer cleared two more bars to take the top spot and set the new school record at an impressive 17-00.25 (5.19m).
Earlier in the day Riggs had also earned a second place finish in the javelin, another event where the top two spots were claimed by the Pioneers. Riggs threw 172-05 (52.56m) while teammate Evan Rossing won with a 173-07 (52.91m) toss.
Later in the afternoon Ian LaMere ran away with the 10,000m crown. After a slow pace was set from the lead pack of runners, LaMere took the lead and stayed just far enough ahead to win the race, crossing the finish in 32:33.96. LaMere will come back Saturday as the favorite in the 5,000m run.
On the women's side, Amber Williams claimed the long jump title for the second year in a row with a 18-1.75 (5.53m) leap. Finishing third was teammate Kelsey Reed with a jump of 17-9.5 (5.42m).
Also earning a third place finish for the Pioneers was Chelsey Heiden in the 10,000m run. Heiden crossed the finish in 40:40.85 to earn All-WIAC honors for the second year in a row in the event.
The UW-Whitewater hosted Championships will conclude with day 2 on Saturday. Action begins with the decathlon 110m hurdles at 10am.
