Three Winners Highlight Day One of WIAC Championships
Matt Dwyer, Amber Williams, and Sam Poser highlighted day one of the WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with individual wins.
OSHKOSH, Wis. - Matt Dwyer, Amber Williams, and Sam Poser highlighted day one of the WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with individual wins.
Dwyer won the pole vault in a school record height of 16-6.75 (5.05m). Dwyer battled UW-Stout's Christian Lucchesi for the lead. After both clearing 16-2.75 (4.95m), and Dwyer clearing 16-6.75, Lucchesi chose to pass to 16-10.75 (5.15m) to try and take the lead from Dwyer. Dwyer claimed the win after both failed to make the height. Dwyer moves to the number five national ranking in Division III.
Amber Williams was 1 centimeter short of the school record in the long jump. Williams won the competition with a 19-0.25 jump (5.80m), exactly 1 foot over UW-Stout's Carli Clifton. Williams' mark moves her to the top of the Division III national performance list. Prior to the long jump, Williams participated in the high jump claiming second place with a jump of 5-4.5 (1.64m).
The third Pioneer win came at the hands of senior Sam Poser. Poser ran most of the 5,000 meter race with the lead pack and kept himself within striking distance of the leader. In the final mile of the race, Poser ran down UW-La Crosse's Austin Zajkowski and pulled away with the lead. Poser retained the lead to cross the finish in a season best time of 14:53.59.
In the women's 5,000 meter run, Chelsey Heiden was able to claim All-Conference honors with a third place finish. After coming in seeded tenth, Heiden ran a strong race to finish in a career best 17:51.51.
The men's and women's Distance Medley Relay finished off the day's running events with a pair of 3rd place finishes. Claiming All-Conference Honorable Mention for the women were Teagan Seneczko, Devan Montgomery, Johanna Meister, and Allison Wells. The baton crossed the finish line in 12:35.73 for the lady Pioneers. The men's All-Conference Honorable Mention relay was composed of Ben Rhode, Paul Rapp, Zach Lee and Matt Wubben. The men's baton crossed the finish line in 10:11.73.
The men's team finished the day with 40 points and is currently sitting in fourth place. The women go into day two in sixth place with 32 points. Action continues in day two with the women's pentathlon at 9am.
