Pioneers sweep Rams in home opener
PLATTEVILLE, Wis- After a week of shuffling game dates and fields, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team finally got a chance to open at home with a pair of victories over Cornell College. Originally scheduled for Saturday and at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex, the Pioneers (8-8) defeated the Rams (2-13) 7-2 and 7-4 in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. Home of the Pioneer football, men’s and women’s soccer teams, the softball team played its first game in the stadium since 2013 due to field conditions.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis- After a week of shuffling game dates and fields, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team finally got a chance to open at home with a pair of victories over Cornell College. Originally scheduled for Saturday and at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex, the Pioneers (8-8) defeated the Rams (2-13) 7-2 and 7-4 in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. Home of the Pioneer football, men's and women's soccer teams, the softball team played its first game in the stadium since 2013 due to field conditions.
The Pioneers piled up 25 hits, 13 RBIs and 14 runs in the doubleheader. Rachel Plautz went 5-7 on the day including 4-4 in game two. Amanda Stanczuk also went 4-4 in game two and 5-8 on the day.
The Pioneers never trailed Sunday and jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings of the day which included four runs batted in off back-to-back doubles by Claire Bakkestuen and Jordan Johnson in the 2nd inning. Plautz and Alexandria Davis also tallied doubles in game one.
Bakkestuen (3-3) took the win in game one and pitched the final five innings striking out six, walking one and offering up two hits and no runs.
In game two, the Pioneers once again took an early lead tallying three runs in the 1st inning. Lead-off Plautz homered in the team's first at-bat. Riley Kelsch then singled to center field to bring home one run and Angela Laabs stepped up next and singled down the leftfield line to bat in the third run of the inning. Cornell drew in 3-2 in the 2nd of a double, but a 2RBI single to centerfield by Stanczuk scored two more runs to give the Pioneers a 5-2 lead after four innings. Both teams added a pair of runs in the 6th inning.
McKenna Rommel started her second game of the day and struck out two, walked one and allowed five hits. Jordan Johnson (3-1) claimed a third win of the season and pitched the final 3.2 innings and tallied one strikeout, three walks and allowed five hits and two runs.
The Pioneers will return to action on Tuesday, March 29 when they travel to St. Ambrose for another non-conference doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
