13th-ranked UW-Whitewater too much for Pioneers to handle

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team fell to 13th-ranked UW-Whitwater, 4-0 and 4-1 on Friday afternoon at van Steenderen Field.
The Pioneers fall to 2-10 in conference play and will need to sweep UW-Stevens Point on Saturday to keep their post-season hopes alive. The Warhawks extend their winning streak to six game and improve to 26-3 and 9-2 in WIAC play.
GAME ONE: UW-Platteville 0, UW-Whitewater 4
A Pioneer error in the second inning helped give the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks broke the game up in fourth innings and scored three runs without recording a hit. UW-Platteville's Melissa Anderson walked the first two batters in the inning and a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. UWW took advantage of the free bases and scored three runs, 4-0.
Both teams tallied four hits but the Pioneers left eight runners on base while UWW left five.
The Pioneers four hits came from Becca Lowe, Cassandra Bonin, Colleen Lowe and Kayla Gosdeck.
Anderson threw four inning and struck out five while allowing four runs (three earned), two hits and two walks.
GAME TWO: UW-Platteville 1, UW-Whitewater 4
The Pioneers were able to dodge a bullet in the first inning as the Warhawks only scored one run on three hits and left two on base.
UWW expanded its lead, 2-0, in the third with a lead off solo home run.
Anderson came in relief in the fourth and the Warhawks took advantage \of the pitching change recording three hits in the first four batters to score two runs.
The Pioneers tried to mount a comeback in the sixth, but left the bases load and could only score one run, 4-1. Collen Lowe started the comeback with a one-out single down the left field line and advanced to second on Ashlen Folkers' single to left field. The Pioneers then loaded the base on a fielder's choice but could only push one run across.
The Warhawks out hit the UW-Platteville 11-4 and left on 11 runners on to the Pioneers eight.
The Lowe sisters, Folkers and Ellyn Goerdt recorded the Pioneers four hits.
Jeni Freiburger took the loss and gave up seven hits in three innings.
The Pioneers have a very quick turnaround and will host UW-Stevens Point on Saturday and then travel to UW-Eau Claire on Sunday.
