PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball dropped both of its games on senior day to UW-La Crosse, 7-3 and 9-4 on Saturday at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex.
For the first time this season the Pioneers were able to play on their own field. Last week the Pioneers played at Pioneer Stadium the home for men and women soccer and football.
GAME ONE: UW-Platteville 3, UW-La Crosse 7
Senior Colleen Lowe homered to dead center field to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Eagles tied the game up at 1-1 with a home run of their own by Kelli Anderson in the fifth inning. In the bottom half of the inning senior Molly Rice recorded a one-out double and eventually scored on a wild pitch regaining the Pioneers lead, 2-1.
In the sixth inning, UWL tallied five of its 11 hits producing four runs and taking a 5-2 lead. The Pioneers took a run back in the bottom half of the six but couldn't over come the two Eagle insurance runs in the seventh frame.
Senior Melissa Anderson took the loss and gave up 11 hits and seven runs while striking out four.
The Pioneers had six different players record their six hits.
GAME TWO: UW-Platteville 4, UW-La Crosse 9
Two Pioneers miscues allowed UW-La Crosse take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A two-out two-run homer gave UWL a 5-0 lead in the fourth, but when the Pioneers got their chance to bat in the fourth they made it a one-run game, 5-4. The Pioneers took advantage of a UWL error and used three hits to score four runs.
The Eagles pushed it to a two-run game, 6-4 in the sixth and then put the Pioneers away in the seventh with three more runs.
Freshman Carley Rote put her hitting streak to ten games, while Lowe tallied two of the Pioneer seven hits.
Junior Jeni Freiburger fanned six Eagle batters in six innings of work but gave up nine hits and six runs (three earned).
The Pioneers will play three midweek nonconference doubleheaders, starting with a trip to Dubuque on Monday at 3 p.m. Then UW-Platteville returns home on Tuesday against Loras at 4 p.m. then back on the road to Coe College on Thursday.
