PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team shutout Fontbonne University Sunday afternoon with three different freshmen scoring three of the four goals in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers (1-0-1) had complete control over the field in game two of the season holding a staggering 24-2 shot advantage over the Griffins (0-2-0). The day gave opportune to a young Pioneer team with three freshman and one sophomore accounting for the four-goal shutout.
The first and only goal of the first half was an unassisted goal by freshman Cayden Carlson at the 11:45 minute mark.
The Griffins had the chance to even out the game in the 28th minute, but senior goalkeeper Nate Miller showcased his skills with a diving penalty kick save. That save would be one of only two shots Miller faced on the day.
With the turf temperature rising to nearly 90 degrees, the Pioneers' conditioning proved to pay off as the team pulled away from the visitors in the second half. Freshman Jack Gentilli scored his first goal off a pass from teammate Brendan Carr in the 60th minute. Freshman Nate Staral owned the third goal eight minutes later with an assist from David Regan while sophomore Boston Riley then sealed the fate of the day with his unassisted goal at the 84:42 minute mark to put the Pioneers ahead 4-0.
Junior Gabe Tovar led the Pioneers with four shots followed by Gentilli and junior Adison Freybler with three shots apiece.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 4 vs. Simpson College at 6:30 p.m. in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
