Warhawks run past Pioneers

UW-Whitewater used a 16-0 run to break open a one-point game and beat UW-Platteville 67-52 Wednesday on Bo Ryan Court.

Leading 41-40, the visiting Warhawks used that 16-0 run that spanned six minutes. Jason Price began the streak with two free throws that made the score 43-40 and two Kori Vernon's two free shots finished the run at 4:57 and the Warhawks up 57-40.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Platteville are tied for fourth place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 6-5 after splitting their season series. UWP won 66-63 on Jan. 10.

The Pioneers led 9-0 to begin the game and used a 10-2 run to begin the second half with a 37-32 lead. The Warhawks tied the score at 37-37 on Anthony Mlachnick's layup and went up 41-39 on two Jason Price baskets. Mark Gossen's jump shot brought the Pioneers back within 41-40 before the Warhawks exploded on their run.

Gossens paced the Pioneers (11-8 overall) with 15 points, while Mike Jamerson scored 12, and Mike Shaw had 10.

Price led the Warhawks (13-7 overall) with 19 points, making 8-12 from the field, while Mike Toellner made all free throws and finished with 15 points. Josh King added 10 pooints on 4-4 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the line, while Vernon had 9 points and 10 rebounds. UW-Platteville plays host to UW-River Falls Saturday at 1 p.m.
