Pioneers prevail in double overtime

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team (16-3, 6-2 WIAC) ranked No. 15 on the D3hoops.com poll, defeated UW-Oshkosh (12-7, 6-2 WIAC) 91-87 in double overtime on Wednesday night. Senior Carter Voelker eclipsed 1,000 career points in the first half of the win.

First half

• The Pioneers led 8-2 early in the half and the Titans worked their way back with a 13-3 run to take a 21-16 with 7:13 remaining in the half.
• The Pioneers finished the half on a 19-5 run and led 35-26 going into halftime.
• Senior Carter Voelker surpassed 1,000 career points when he knocked down his second three-pointer of the night with 1:09 remaining in the half.
• Junior Quentin Shields had 10 first half points, added four rebounds and led the team with three assists.
• The Pioneers shot 38.7% (12-of-31) from the field and 43.8% (7-of-16) from three-point range and the Titans shot 30% (9-of-30) from the field and 30% (3-of-10) on three-point attempts.
• The Pioneers shot 100% (4-of-4) from the free throw line and UW-Oshkosh shot 62.5% (5-of-8) from the free throw line.

Second half

• The Pioneers led by as many as 18 points with 17:19 remaining but the Titans erased the deficit and took a 65-61 lead with 5:28 remaining.
• Junior Justin Stovall had 10 points, three rebounds and two blocks. Stovall shot 75%(3-of-4) from the field and shot 100% from three point range (1-of-1) and the free throw line (3-of-3).
• Shields scored another 10 points in the second half and shot 50% (3-of-6) from the field and 100% (4-of-4) from the free throw line.
• The Pioneers shot 40% (10-of-25) from the field and 20% (2-of-10) from three-point range while UW-Oshkosh shot 47.1% (16-of-34) from the field and 44.4% (4-of-9) on three-pointers.
• The Pioneers shot 86.7% (13-of-15) from the free throw line while UW-Oshkosh shot 88.9% (8-of-9).

• Voelker had seven of the Pioneers' 11 points in the period and shot 75% (3-of-4) from the field.
• The Pioneers shot 71.4% (5-of-7) from the field and did not attempt a three-pointer while UW-Oshkosh shot 66.7% (4-of-6) from the field and 66.7% (2-of-3) on three-pointers.
• The Pioneers shot 86.7% (13-of-15) from the free throw line while UW-Oshkosh shot 1-of-1 from the line

• Shields had six points in the second overtime, all scored from the free throw line.
• The Pioneers shot 20% (1-of-5) from the field and 0% (0-of-3) from three-point range while UW-Oshkosh shot 37.5% (3-of-8) from the field and 0% (0-of-2) on three-pointers.
• The Pioneers shot 72.7% (8-of-11) from the free throw line while UW-Oshkosh did not attempt a free throw.

Notables 

• UW-Platteville improves to 16-3 overall, 6-2 WIAC.
• UW-Oshkosh falls to 12-7 overall, 6-2 WIAC. 
• Shields led the Pioneers with 28 points and added six rebounds and five assists. Shields shot 43.8% (7-of-16) from the field and 92.9% (13-of-14) from the free throw line.
• Voelker had 18 points and reached the 1,000 point milestone in the first half.
• Stovall double doubled with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Stovall shot 62.5% (5-of-8) from the field and 66.7% (2-of-3) on three pointers.
• UW-Platteville shot 41.2% (28-of-68) from the field and 31% (9-of-29) from beyond the three-point arc. UW-Oshkosh shot 41% (32-of-78) from the field and 37.5% (9-of-24) from three-point territory.
• The Pioneers shot 78.8% (26-of-33) from the free throw line and the Titans shot 77.8% (14-of-18).
