Showing little rust after a nearly two-week break from games, UW-Platteville raced past Ripon College 78-58 Friday night in the Just A Game Classic in Wisconsin Dells.
Carter Voelker scored 21 points, Matt Oestreich had 12, and three others scored eight apiece to help the Pioneers improve to 9-1.
UW-Platteville broke an 8-8 tie with an 18-4 run for an early 26-12 advantage. The Pioneers led 38-21 at the half. Quentin Shields' layup extended the margin to 48-27 early in the second half, and the Red Hawks never came within 20 the rest of the night. Twice, the Pioneers posted 28-point advantages.
Tyler Simms scored 11 points, and Trent Jones 10 for Ripon, who fell to 4-4. The Pioneers held the Red Hawks to 37.7 percent from the field, including 26.9 in the opening half.
"I thought early on we struggled from the floor shooting and settled too much on our perimeter shooting," Coach Jeff Gard said. "While shaking the rust off offensively, we were able to rely on the one end of the floor we were able to control."
The Pioneers return to the classic Saturday to face St. Mary's at 3 p.m. The Winona, Minnesota school fell 87-50 to undefeated UW Oshkosh in the other Just A Game contest Friday night.Oshkosh and Ripon play at 5 p.m.
