Warhawks slip by Pioneers, 68–66, on last-second basket

Sophomore guard Robert Duax (Dubuque/Hempstead) hit a pair of free throws with 1:26 left and junior guard Trey Sigel (Rock Island, Ill.) drained a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to tie the game.
Duax scored a game-high 23 points on 8 of 19 shooting and had five rebounds and four assists to lead the Pioneers. Sigel made three 3-pointers and added 12 points.
Freshman guard Carter Voelker (Kiel) also made three 3-pointers and scored a career-high 12 points in the loss.
Van Schyndel scored a team-high 17 points in 15 minutes off the bench to lead the Warhawks. Reserve guard Andre Brown added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.
UW–Whitewater improved to 12–3 overall and 1–3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, UW–Platteville fell to 7–8, 0–4.
The shorthanded Pioneers, who were playing without starting point guard Matt Oestreich (Marshfield) and junior sixth-man Jake Showalter (Germantown), shot 39.3 percent (22 of 56) from the field and made 15 of 19 free throw attempts (79 percent).
UW–Whitewater began the game on a 17–4 run, but the Pioneers closed the half on a 25–14 run to pull within two points at 31–29.
UW–Platteville continued that momentum used an 8–0 run early in the second half to take a 44–37 on a pair of free throws by junior Dan Lowe (Byron, Ill.) with 13:25 left in the game.
The Pioneers led for the eight minutes until Brown converted a three-point play with 5:24 left to give UWW a 55–54 lead.
Sigel made a pair of free throws on UW–Platteville's next possession, but Van Schyndel scored the Warhawks' next six points to make it 61–58.
UW–Platteville will return to action Wednesday night against UW–Stevens Point at Bo Ryan Court at 7 p.m. The Pointer (8–6, 2–2 WIAC) dropped a narrow 69–68 decision to #7-ranked UW–River Falls Saturday night.
