UWM Panthers power past Men's Basketball, 68-54
After the UW-Platteville men's basketball took its first lead of the game right out of halftime, UW-Milwaukee used a 20-5 run to pull away from the Pioneers, and earned the 68-54 victory in an exhibition game on Thursday night at UWM Panther Arena.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – After the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball took its first lead of the game right out of halftime, UW-Milwaukee used a 20-5 run to pull away from the Pioneers, and earned the 68-54 victory in an exhibition game on Thursday night at UWM Panther Arena.
The Panthers overpowered the Pioneers in the paint with a 34-12 points in the paint advantage and a plus-11 rebound (43-32) margin. The Pioneers' tough defense held UWM to just 33 percent (10-30) shooting in the opening half, but Milwaukee managed to break through in the second-half, and shot 56 percent (14-25) in the final 20 minutes.
Senior Jim Stocki led the Pioneers with 14 points, followed by freshman Matt Oestreich with eight points in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Cory Vaassen was all over the boards for UW-Platteville with a team-best nine rebounds and also added six points off the bench.
UWM's Matt Tiby posted a double-double with 13 boards and 10 points, while Akeem Springs scored a game-high 15 points.
The Pioneers stayed with the Panthers early, and only trailed by two, 10-8, with seven minutes into the game. UWM managed stretched its lead to nine points, 25-16, at the 4:38 mark. But the Pioneers used a 9-2 run to end the half, cutting their deficit to two, 27-25.
Stocki opened the second half with a three-pointer, giving the Pioneers their first lead of the game, and then a jumper by Jake Manning gave UW-Platteville a 30-27 lead. The Panthers halted UW-Platteville's momentum with a 20-3 run, taking a 47-33 lead with just over 11-minutes to play. The Pioneers were able to cut UWM's lead to 10 points twice, but couldn't get any closer.
UW-Platteville opens the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. against Coe for the Gabe Miller Tip-off Classic.
