PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – No. 1 ranked UW-Stevens Point didn't commit a turnover in the second half and managed to pull away from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team late in game, 76-61, Wednesday on Bo Ryan Court.
The Pointers (17-0, 8-0 WIAC) forced the Pioneers (11-5, 6-1 WIAC) to 10 second half turnovers. UWSP capitalized on the second half turnovers to their fullest as they scored 20 points off the turnovers.
Senior Chas Cross recorded his third double-double of the season for the Pioneers with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate Eric "Skip" Gerber added 11 points while junior Jim Stocki and freshman Cory Vaassen contributed 10 points apiece.
UWSP's Tyler Tillema led all scorers with 20 points while Trevor Hass added 18 points.
The Pointers managed to take their largest lead of the first half, 16-9, with just under seven minutes into the game. The Pioneers surged back and erased their deficit, tying it up at 28 apiece with 2:23 till the break. A layup by Cross in the final minute of the half gave the Pioneers a 33-31 lead, going into the locker room.
The Pioneers took a six-point lead, 43-37, at the 15:31 mark of the second half, before UWSP used a 14-point swing to take a 57-49 lead with just under eight minutes to play. UW-Platteville managed to bring it back to a one-possession game, 59-56, with 4:38 to play, but a three-minute 11-0 run by the Pointers put the game out of reach, 70-56.
The Pioneers will look to rebound on Saturday on Alumni Day against UW-Superior at 3 p.m.
