Pioneers pull ahead in close game against Stout
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Twelfth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers defeated 22nd-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stout 34-27 on Saturday in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Twelfth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers defeated 22nd-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stout 34-27 on Saturday in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The first quarter indicated from the beginning that this would be an exciting game. Stout's Kevion McDonald rushed for 25 yards to put the Blue Devils on the board first. Pioneers Sean Studer rushed (10 yards) into the end zone and was followed with an extra point by Michael Pratl to tie the game for the first time of the day at 7-7.
The Blue Devils and Pioneers had equal possession of the ball second quarter. Jack Eddy connected with Tyler Knigge to bring the score to 14-10. Stout then followed with back-to-back touchdowns. Pratl's 40-yard field goal brought the score to 17-24 at the end of the half.
In the third quarter, Eddy completed to Tim Jensen for a 54-yard touchdown which tied the score, 24-24. Pratl completed a 30-yard field goal later to tie the score once again at 27-27.
In the final quarter, a 37-yard pass from Eddy to Mark Johnson would edge the Pioneers to 34-27 with 7:18 left in the game. Chandler Crary intercepted Alston Jay's pass and was followed with another interception by teammate, Josh Mackie. With less than 0:30 left in the game, Ben Mogilevsky stopped Jay Alston on third and one for a loss of 4 yards and Alston's pass on fourth down fell incomplete. Eddy took a knee to end the game and give the Pioneers the victory in their first conference game of the season.
The 12th-ranked Pioneers intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble to remain undefeated at 4-0 while the Blue Devils fell to 2-1.
The Pioneers return to action next Saturday at University of Wisconsin-River Falls at 1 p.m.
