Pioneers Rally for 10-6 Win Over Edgewood

Host Wisconsin-Platteville scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 6-5 deficit en route to a 10-6 win over Edgewood at Kendall Murray Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneers had seven of its 12 hits with two outs in the win to raise their record to 5-14. Two of the seven came from Cody Luther, who also had three two-out RBIs in the win. Luther had entered the game with a .238 batting average in two out situations.

Edgewood had 10 hits from seven different players in the loss to fall to 8-13. The Eagles’ Ryan Walker, Mike Selvaggi and Alex Jasluski each had two hits.

After the Eagles had built an early 4-0 advantage in the first two innings, the Pioneers scored three in the second and two more in the third to take a 5-4 lead. All five of the runs came with two outs for UW-Platteville. In the second, the Pioneers’ Aaron Hopson had a two-RBI single and in the third, Tyler Jacobson (pictured) and Luther each had RBI singles.

The Eagles regained the lead when they plated two runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead before the five run outburst by the Pioneers. Trevor Kattre started the inning being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out by Hopson. A Levi Ney walk put runners on the corners.

Next, Ney swiped second with Jesse Wiley at the plate and two runners in scoring position. An infield single by Wiley tied the game at 6. Then, the Pioneers went ahead on a Brad Milka fielder’s choice to score Ney for a 7-6 lead. Next, Jared Baroni hit a single to right and advanced Milka to third.

Then, the Pioneers capitalized on a fielding error when Jacobson hit a ball that was misplayed by the Edgewood second baseman, scoring Milka. Next, Luther picked up his second and third RBI of the afternoon with a single up the middle to stretch the lead to four, 10-6. The hit prompted an Edgewood pitching change to Tony Ales, who got out of the inning with a strikeout.

The Pioneers’ bullpen, in relief of starter Kevin Potorek, Griffin Wiley and Mike Hooker pitched the final five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Hooker picked up the win, going the final 3 2/3 innings with one-hit relief.

Offensively for the Pioneers, Hopson, Milka, Jacobson and Luther each had two hits and Jacobson and Luther each had three RBIs on the afternoon.

Next up for UW-Platteville is a doubleheader on Wednesday at WIAC rival, UW-Whitewater at 1 p.m.
