UW-Platteville Wraps Up Spring Break Trip with 12-5 Loss to No. 9 Christopher Newport

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team closed out its spring break trip to Virginia with a 12-5 loss to No. 9 Christopher Newport on Friday.

The Pioneers (1-6) found themselves behind 7-0 through the first four innings before scoring twice in both the fifth and sixth innings to cut the deficit to 7-4. Christopher Newport came back to add to its lead with a three-run effort in the bottom of the sixth. UW-Platteville scored a run in the seventh; however, the Captains again had the answer with two more runs en route to the win.

Six-different players for UW-Platteville contributed to an eight-hit attack including two hits from Tyler Jacobson and Brett Benesh. Bases loaded walks in the fifth plated the two runs for the Pioneers in the fifth and a RBI single and an unearned run in the sixth led to the two runs for UW-Platteville. In the seventh, the Pioneers scored its run when Jacobson drove in Brad Milka on a RBI single.

Christopher Newport managed to record 13 hits and overcome six errors to raise their record to 22-1 on the season. Matt Shoemaker and Connor Madden each had three hits in the win. Plus, Madden drove in a game-high four and Shoemaker scored four times in the win.

The Pioneers used four pitchers in the loss with starter Shane Murphy getting the loss, who falls to 0-1. Christopher Newport starter Tyler McElhenny went six innings, allowed seven hits and four unearned runs in the win to raise his record to 2-0.

Next up for UW-Platteville is a trip to St. Louis, Missouri for four games, where they will face Washington University twice, first on Thursday, Mar. 24 at 3 p.m. and Carthage twice, first on Friday, Mar. 25 at noon.
