Pioneers win one in tripleheader

Posted March 27, 2010

UW-Platteville and Washington U. played a rare baseball tripleheader Saturday in St. Louis, with Wash. U. rallying to take the rubber game and the series.

The Bears won the opener 1-0 in eight innings; the Pioneers captured the second game 9-3; and Wash U. won the third contest 10-7.

The teams were scheduled to play doubleheaders both Friday and Saturday, but were rained out Friday and played the three contests Saturday. The Pioneers will add one more game to its schedule to replace Friday's other contest. The home opener is now a 1 p.m. doubleheader Thursday vs. Loras instead of the scheduled game.

The opener was a fine pitching matchup between the Pioneers' Brandon Byrne and the Bears' Jeremy Rogoff, who both went the distance. Byrne yielded just three hits through seven innings, but the Bears loaded the bases in the eighth on two hits and an error. Joe Noon then singled home the game-winner.

The second game belonged to the Pioneers. Brett Benesh had four hits, including a double, while Wade Axelson contributed three hits, and Joe Nartowicz, and Kevin Osmanski each had two. Justin Crotty threw the first six innings for the victory, and Wil Osmanski pitched a scoreless seventh.

The Pioneers forged a 7-3 lead in the nightcap. Levi Ney had an RBI triple in the first and scored on Justin Jacobson's double. The Bears rallied with a two-run fifth and a five-run sixth. Matt Bayer's bases-loaded double cleared the bases and was the big blow in the sixth.

Wash U. is now 14-8 overall, and the Pioneers are 6-3 after what is believed just to be the second tripleheader in school history.
