Fire on bus, walk-off HR make for bad day

Posted April 10, 2010

A day that began with a fire on the bus ended with a ninth-inning loss for the UW-Platteville baseball team.

The bus to UW-Stevens Point caught fire in the back after a tire blowout, leading to an evacuation roughly 40 minutes after leaving Plateville. All occupants got out safely, and a new bus was brought to transport the team the rest of the way.

Brad Archambeau's ninth-inning solo home run gave the host Pointers an 11-10 win in the nightcap, adding to the Pioneer misery. The Pointers also won the first game 14-5.

Joe Nartowicz had tied the score at 10-10 with an eighth-inning HR for UWP. Tyler Jacobson had three hits for the Pioneers (10-7, 0-4 WIAC).

Jared Schuman hit two home runs, and Eric Fritz, Travis Tuschen and Archambeau hit one each for the Pointers (11-5, 2-1).

Fritz had two of the five Pointer home runs in the opener, while Aaron Hopson had one for the Pioneers.
