Eagles rally past Pioneers

Posted April 21, 2010

UW-La Crosse scored their only three runs in the bottom of the ninth, stunning UW-Platteville 3-2 Wednesday and completing a doubleheader sweep. The Eagles won the first game 15-7.

Brett Jacobson's two-out single scored Jay Fanta with the tying run, and when UWP misplayed the ball, Zach Harazin--who started the play on first base--scampered home with the winning run.

The loss spoiled a magnificent effort by pitcher Wil Osmanski, who allowed just five hits over 8.2 innings. He was matched scoreless innings through the first seven by Mitch Running. In the eighth, the Pioneers' Jason Jacobson singled home the game's first run, and Tyler Jacobson had an RBI sacrifice fly against reliever Steve Hennes in the ninth.

The Pioneers slipped to 14-13 overall and 4-10 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Eagles improved to 10-14, 3-7.

In the opener, the Eagles put up 10 in the seventh, erasing a 6-4 Pioner lead. Fanta hit two home runs himself that inning, including a grand slam. Corey Geary had four hits for the Eagles.

Brett Benesh had five hits on the day for the Pioneers, including three in the second game. Levi Ney had thee hits in the opener.
