Posted April 2, 2010

UW-Platteville unleashed an offensive attack never before seen in school history, hitting a staggering 15 home runs to beat Carroll 32-8 an 23-13 Friday in Frame Park in Waukesha.

Coach Eric Frese's team destroyed school records for runs (32), hits (30), home runs (8) and RBIs (27) in the opener. The 30 hits also tied the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record for most in a contest.

Seven different players went the distance in the opener, led by Jason Jacobson with two HRs and seven RBIs. He hit a pair of three-run home runs, while Wade Axelson, and Jacob Cates also hit three-run bombs. Levi Ney, Alex Siehoff, and Aaron Hopson also contributed home runs during the mind-numbing offensive onslaught. Bill Oppriecht earned the win, while Sam Hershberger pitched the final two scoreless innings.

In the nightcap, Brett Benesh, Hopson, Joe Nartowicz, Stevem Bomkamp, Siehoff, Derrick Rice, and Axelson all went deep, pacing a 22-hit attack. The Pioneers used an 11-run third inning inning to put away Carroll. Grant Oldenburg earned the win in relief.

Counting Thursday's doubleheader sweep of Loras, the Pioneers accumulated a whopping 81 runs and 89 hits in a 30-hour span.

Ten different Pioneers are hitting at least .400 for the Pioneers, who have a .409 team batting average, while 11 have already homered in the first 13 games. UWP is 10-3 on the season.

The Pioneers, ranked seventh in runs per game nationally before this week will match another team ranked in the NCAA III in the top 10 in scoring Wednesday, when UWP plays host to UW-Whitewater, ranked third, in the WIAC-opening doubleheader Wednesday at 1 p.m. The last time these two met in Platteville, they combined for 94 runs and 108 hits in a four-game series.
