Pioneers start 3-1 in conference play
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend against University of Wisconsin-Stout to begin their WIAC competition.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend against University of Wisconsin-Stout to begin their WIAC competition.
The Pioneers improve to 7-9 overall (3-1 WIAC) while the Blue Devils fell to 6-5 overall (1-3 WIAC).
On Saturday, the Pioneers lost the first game of the doubleheader 2-1 in 11 innings. Senior Caleb Kaufmann threw 7.0 innings and allowed one earned run. The Pioneers had ten hits throughout the game but stranded ten runners on base in the process. Senior Mitchell Susa went 3-of-5 while freshman Ben Espinoza and Senior Curtis Barsness each went 2-of-4.
In the second game of the Saturday's doubleheader the Pioneers were able to get their offense across the plate for the 5-2 victory. The Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom on the first inning to give starting pitcher senior Tyler Vogel an early lead. Vogel threw 6.2 innings without any earned runs and struck out 11 to earn the win. Senior Scottie Gordon pitched 2.1 innings in relief to finish the game allowing one earned run. The Pioneers had fewer hits than the first game but were patient and found their way one base with eight walks. Lead off hitter Espinoza again went 2-of-4 with a walk and a run scored, sophomore Jonathan Kelso had two RBI and a run scored and freshman Logan Kozak went 2-of-2 with a walk and a run scored.
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader the Pioneers won 4-1 behind the arms of junior Edwin Calvillo and sophomore Samuel Peters who threw 5.0 and 4.0 innings, respectively. Calvillo earned the win. Kelso led the offense with a 4-of-5 showing, an RBI and run scored. Sophomore Sam Behm started as the DH had two hits and an RBI while Kozak went 2-of-4 with an RBI and run scored.
The final game of the matchup came down to the wire but the Pioneers pulled off th 7-6 win. The Pioneers received most of the offense from the bottom of the batting order with the 5-9 batters combining to hit .500 (9-of-18), scored five runs and had four RBI. Behm went 2-of-4, junior Collin Mormann went 2-of-4 with two RBI, Barsness went 2-of-4 with two runs scored and Kozak remained hot with a 3-of-4 game with an RBI and run scored. Senior Russell Lundius started on the mound allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings before freshman Ryan Pieczko came in to pitch the final 4.2 innings with three earned runs. Pieczko earned the win.
The Pioneers travel to play a non-conference game against Cornell College on Thursday, April 4 at 6 pm in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
