PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opening weekend baseball series between UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point was moved to Platteville because the Pointers' field is still snow covered. The only stipulation, per WIAC rules, was UWSP still was considered the home team and batted in the bottom half of the innings.
The Pointers sure took advantage of that fact.
UWSP walked off with victories twice to sweep the four-game set from the Pioneers. The Pointers won Saturday's games 6-5 and 7-6 and Sunday's contests 9-1 and 6-5. Neal Matson singled home the game-winning run in the ninth in the first game Saturday, and Will Iloncaie raced home on an error in the ninth of the Sunday nightcap.
The Pointers improved to 12-4 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 6-14.
Collin Mormann and Mitchell Susa each had five hits on the weekend for the orange and blue, while Josh Moses counted two doubles among his four hits. Darren Strasburg tossed three innings of one-hit ball to lead the pitching staff, while Skylar Frese allowed just one earned run and three hits in six innings.
The Pioneers play at UW-La Crosse in a doubleheader Wednesday, then Coach Eric Frese's crew plays host to UW-Stout in another four-game set Saturday and Sunday.
