CLAYTON, Mo. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville took early leads in both games of a doubleheader with Fontbonne, but were unable to close out either as they fell 12-3 and 5-3 Thursday night at Shaw Park.
In game one the Pioneers took a 3-1 lead in the second inning on back-to-back two out singles by Brennan Kearney and Josh Moses. They saw their lead disappear in the fourth and their deficit grew to 10-3 in the fifth. Cal Krafcheck gave up just three earned runs in four innings of work, but was charged with the loss.
The Pioneers got on the board first in game two as Jonathon Kelso drew a bases loaded walk in the second inning. Fontbonne tied the score in the bottom half of the inning, but UW-Platteville once again took the lead on a two out RBI single by Kelso in the fifth. Ryan Vogel followed with an RBI single of his own to put the Pioneers up 3-1. A strong outing by Riley Vandenberg had the Pioneers in great position for a series split, but the Griffins rallied for three in the seventh and one in the eighth for the 5-3 final.
UW-Platteville falls to 1-7 on the season while Fontbonne improves to 8-6.
The Pioneers to Terre Haute, Ind. this weekend for a pair of games against Rose-Hulman and Chicago Saturday, and a second game with Rose-Hulman on Sunday.
