Pioneers win shootout for first W of the year
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team finished their second consecutive weekend in Louisville, Kent. with a 15-13 win over DePauw University Sunday afternoon at Derby City Field.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team finished their second consecutive weekend in Louisville, Kent. with a 15-13 win over DePauw University Sunday afternoon at Derby City Field. The Pioneers went 1-2 overall at the second weekend of the Derby City Classic, and move to 1-5 overall.
Jonathon Kelso had five hits and five RBI for the Pioneers while Curtis Barsness, Collin Mormann, and Josh Moses all had four hits. Cody Roush launched the first long ball of the season for UW-Platteville in the game against Anderson.
DePauw University
In their only game Sunday, UW-Platteville scored in six different innings against DePauw (1-2) for their best offensive outing since the 2016 season. Pioneer batters combined for 14 hits and all nine starters scored at least one run.
Kelso got the scoring started for the Pioneers with a one out single to left field that plated Moses who led off the game with a single. In the top of the second, Moses put UW-Platteville up 2-0 with his second single of the game that scored Brooks Chandler.
After DePauw tied the game in the third, Moses collected his third hit in four innings with a two RBI triple. The Pioneers added two more in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.
Caleb Kaufmann put together a strong outing in his second start of the year for the Pioneers. He struck out seven Tiger batters through the first four innings before surrendering three runs in the fifth.
Taking a 6-5 lead into the top of the seventh, UW-Platteville put up five in the top of the inning and four more in the eighth. The Pioneers also gave up five in the seventh and three in the eighth, but held on for the 15-13 win.
Spalding University
The Pioneers' second game Saturday featured a rematch with Spalding (8-2) who edged out UW-Platteville 11-9 on Feb. 26.
Kelso gave UW-Platteville a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Golden Eagles responded with 12 unanswered runs for a 12-2 final. Spalding took an 8-2 lead into the seventh, and added four in the bottom of the frame to take a 10 run lead, ending the game in seven innings.
Anderson University
In their first game Saturday, the Pioneers fell to Anderson (2-4) by a final of 9-5. UW-Platteville struck early against Ravens' hurler Seth Edridge on an RBI single by Mormann in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers loaded the bases in the bottom of the second on a three walks, and Brendon Reifsteck scored on an Edridge wild pitch to move UW-Platteville's lead to 2-0.
The Pioneers took their 2-0 lead into the top of the fourth and were an out away from getting out of the inning when Anderson plated two on a Nick Butcher single. The Ravens went on to score two in each the top of the fifth and sixth innings, and added three more runs in the seventh. UW-Platteville scored a single run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth, but could not overcome their deficit.
UW-Platteville travels to St. Louis next Tuesday for a pair of afternoon games against Fontbonne.
