Pioneers drop two games against Pointers
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville dropped both games of their double header against The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers on Friday, April 14. They fell 18-3 in game one and lost 9-1 in game two.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville dropped both games of their double header against The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers on Friday, April 14. They fell 18-3 in game one and lost 9-1 in game two.
Lucas Keller and Caleb Kaufmann started on the mound for the Pioneers and Derek Kawlewski and Ben Miller started for the Pointers.
The Pointers got on the board early in game one with William Iloncaie singling two score two runs and Tyler Thomka hit a sac fly to give the Pointers a 3-0 lead in the first inning. They added onto their lead in the second inning on a Kyle Mrozinski double that scored two runs giving the Pointers a 5-0 lead. The Pioneers got onto the board in the bottom of the second inning on a Curtis Barsness solo home run, cutting the score to 5-1. The Pioneers added another run in the bottom of the third inning on a Colin Deboer groundout that scored Jim Pavlik. The Pointers regained momentum in the top of the fourth, first scoring on a Kyle Mrozinski groundout, then scored two more on a Ryan Stanicek homerun, moving their lead to 8-2. The Pointers could pull away in the top of the fifth inning with both Jordan Carlson and Mrozinski hitting two-run home runs, giving the Pointers a 12-2 lead. Josh Moses helped the Pioneers cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the inning on a groundout that scored Collin Mormann and made the score 12-3. In the top of the sixth inning the Pointers added four runs to their lead with Tommy Duddleston singling to score one run, and a Pioneers error led to two more runs, and a wild pitch allowed one more to score and gave UW-Stevens Point a 16-3 lead. The Pointers scored the final runs of the game in the top half of the seventh inning on a Jordan Carlson two run single to make the score 18-3 in favor of the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point started early again in game two as John Popham worked a bases-loaded walk to earn the first run of the game. Later in the inning Tyler Thomka singled to score two more runs and gave the Pointers a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers picked up their first run in the bottom half of the second inning as Kyle Reinhart lined out and scored Jonny Frese to cut the Pointers lead to 3-1. UW-Stevens Point earned back the run however in the top of the third inning on a Jordan Carlson single which scored Tyler Thomka. The Pointers added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, first on a wild pitch that scored Clint Rose, then Iloncaie singled to score Mrozinski and gave the Pointers a 6-1 lead. The Pointers added another run in the top of the fifth inning on a Clint Rose single that scored Tommy Duddleston and extended UW-Stevens Point lead to 7-1 lead. The Pointers concluded the scoring in the top of the seventh inning as a Mrozinski double scored two runs and moved the lead to 9-1 lead. The final two innings went by without a run scoring and the game ended in a 9-1 Pointers victory.
The Pioneers return to action on with games on Saturday and Sunday with a pair of doubleheaders in Oshkosh against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans.
