The weekend weather broke just enough for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville team to open its home season Sunday, and the Pioneers took full advantage, beating Northland 5-3 and 6-1 in a pair of seven-inning contests.
Tyler Vogel threw five innings of one-hit ball in the nightcap to finish off the sweep. By working down low in the zone, he induced eight of the 18 batters he faced to ground out. Eric Curtis and Tannler Ames each tossed hitless innings to complete the win.
Vogel was helped by a 5-0 lead after two innings. Josh Moses had an RBI infield single, and Jonny Frese a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Connor Crotty homered to left center in the second, and Colin DeBoer added an RBI double. DeBoer and Josh Moses each had two hits, while Frese had a pair of RBIs and Mitch Marty scored twice.
The Pioneers rallied from a 3-2 deficit to claim the opener. Moses smashed a two-run home run through the heavy air in the fifth inning for a 4-3 lead. Frese added a run-scoring double to left-center later in the inning bringing home Kyle Reinhart with an insurance run.
Scott Gordon and Riley Vandenberg threw scoreless innings to preserve the victory for Nathan Fay, who scattered six hits over five innings. Frese and Colin DeBoer had two hits apiece to lead the attack.
Coach Eric Frese's club, now 9-4, returns to Kendall Murray Field Wednesday for a pair of games against Marian. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
