Pioneers fall in extras against TCNJ
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneer baseball team was able to take the 13th ranked Lions of The College of New Jersey to extra innings on the road in the third game of their Florida trip on March 15, but fell in the 11th inning 8-7. Caleb Kaufmann started for the Pioneers, and Max Guidice started for the Lions.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneer baseball team was able to take the 13th ranked Lions of The College of New Jersey to extra innings on the road in the third game of their Florida trip on March 15, but fell in the 11th inning 8-7. Caleb Kaufmann started for the Pioneers, and Max Guidice started for the Lions.
The Lions struck quickly in the first, when Danny Borup singled, and Thomas Persichetti advanced to third and scored on an error. Borup was able to get into scoring position and scored from third on a double play, making the score 2-0. The Pioneers responded in the top of the second inning, scoring on a two RBI double by Taylor Christopher. Christopher scored later in the inning on a Colin Deboer groundout fielder's choice, giving the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.
The Pioneers added to their lead in the third inning when Christopher singled and scored Jim Pavlik to move the score to 4-2. In the fourth, Kyle Reinhart singled to score Josh Moses, giving the Pioneers a 5-2 lead. Curtis Barsness grounded out later in the inning scoring Reinhart to make the score 6-2.
The Lions were able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Mike Follet to score Zachary Schindler. Later in the inning Tommy McCarthy singled to center field to score CJ Gearhart, cutting the lead to 6-4.
The Pioneers picked up a run in the top of the 5th when Christopher scored, and gave the Pioneers a 7-4 lead. The Lions responded in the 7th when Persichetti singled to score Ben Varone and Jacob Simon, cutting the lead to 7-6.
TCNJ tied the game in the bottom of the 9th when Shindler singled to score Jacob Simon to send the game to extras.
Shindler came up with the big hit again in the bottom of the 11th inning, hitting a walk off single and scoring Varone. The victory moved the Lions to 5-1 on the season, and the Pioneers to 3-3.
The Pioneers play again March 16 against the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars. The cougars are 0-7 on the season.
