PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team picked up their second win of their Florida trip on Sunday, after defeating the Stockton University Ospreys 5-2. Ray Hughes started on the mound for the Ospreys, and Nathan Fay started for the Pioneers.
The game began as a pitching duel between the Pioneers senior Fay and the Stockton sophomore Hughes. Neither team was able to get the upper hand on offense until the Pioneers broke a 0-0 tie in the third inning, with James Pavlik and Connor Crotty scoring on an Ospreys error. This 2-0 lead was able to hold up until a Pioneers error in the eighth led to a Joe Pipher single to centerfield, scoring Tyler Hobbs and Zach Gustites, and tying the game at 2.
The Pioneers were able to retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning, when Taylor Christopher singled off of the Ospreys Tyler App to score Kyle Reinhart and Max Meitzler. This gave the Pioneers a 4-2 lead. They added to the lead later in the inning with Pavlik singling home Crotty, giving UW-Platteville a 5-2 lead. Fay was able to shut down Stockton in their final at-bats, earning a complete game victory, and moving the Pioneers' record to 3-1 on the season. The loss moved Stockton's record to 4-2.
The Pioneers play again on Monday March 13, against the McDaniel College Green Terror. McDaniel college is 2-4 on the season.
