PLATTEVILLE, Wis. —The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team went 1-3 with the No. 2 D3Baseball.com-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks on Saturday and Sunday at Kendall Murray Field. The Pioneers are now an even 12-12 on the season.
The Pioneers fell 14-10 in extra innings in the first game on Saturday of the four-game weekend. After leading 4-2 heading into the top of the eighth, a Pioneer error sent four Warhawks in to cross home plate to take the 6-4 lead. UW-Whitewater scoring another run in the top of the ninth, the Pioneers closed the gap and tied the game 7-7 off a walk and a senior George Jester III single to right center. After the Warhawks claimed a big extra inning in the top of the tenth with seven runs, three Pioneer singles brought in three Pioneer runs in the bottom of the tenth but it wasn't enough and the Warhawks prevailed 14-10.
In the second game on Saturday, the Warhawks took the 7-4 win after taking an early 4-0 lead. With a big bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers shrunk the margin to 4-3 with another Jester single, a UW-Whitewater error and a senior Todd Wienkes single to left field. The Warhawks scored three more runs in the top of the fifth, the Pioneers responding with one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be the last run of the game, the final score at 7-4 in UW-Whitewater's favor.
The first game on Sunday went in similar fashion, the Warhawks taking the early lead and taking the 8-3 win over the Pioneers. Senior Casey Schroeder and junior Colin DeBoer played well for the Pioneers, Schroeder recording a double and RBI at the plate and a double play in the field. DeBoer sent the ball deep into left field for a triple that brought in one run while at the plate. He also recorded a double play in the field.
In the final game of the weekend, the Pioneers defeated the Warhawks 4-3 in a 12-inning, two-hour and 45-minute finale. Sophomore relief pitcher Riley Vandenberg earned his first win of the season after striking out five Warhawks and giving up only one hit in four innings pitched.
The Warhawks took command of the game after scoring a single run in the fourth and two more in the sixth, taking the 3-0 lead heading into a scoreless seventh inning. In the bottom of the eighth, senior Tanner Galeazzi flied out to center field to bring in senior Evan Greco as the Pioneers gained momentum. Taking that momentum into the ninth, it was Galeazzi again, this time with a double to center field that brought in two Pioneers to tie the game 3-3. After scoreless 10th and 11th innings, the Pioneers held the Warhawks in the top of the 12th, needing only one run to take the win and they did just that. Junior Taylor Christopher sent the game-winning hit to center field that brought in junior Jim Pavlik to score the final run of the game, the Pioneers winning 4-3.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, April 20 at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa at 5 p.m.
