Baseball splits first two games at UW-La Crosse
The UW-Platteville baseball team came from behind in game one, 7-3, over UW-La Crosse but couldn't manage push a couple across in the night cap falling, 2-0, on Saturday at North Campus Field.
LA CROSSE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team came from behind in game one, 7-3, over UW-La Crosse but couldn't manage push a couple across in the night cap falling, 2-0, on Saturday at North Campus Field.
The Pioneers and Eagles weekend series was moved to La Crosse because a week full of rain made Kendall Murray Field unplayable.
GAME ONE: UW-Platteville 7, UW-La Crosse 3
The Poineers struck first in the bottom half of the opening frame. Freshman Casey Schroeder led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Fellow rookie George Jester III singled up the middle scoring Schroeder.
The Eagles answered with two runs in the top of the second and then scored one more in the third taking a 3-1 lead.
UW-Platteville responded in the bottom half of the third with two runs tying the game up at 3-3. Jester homered to left center scoring Bobby Bean.
The Pioneers had a chance to break the game open in the fourth with bases load but could only manage to score a run taking a 4-3 lead. UW-Platteville finally broke the game open in the sixth scoring three runs on five hits. Junior Ryan Duva led the inning off by getting hit by pitch and scored on Bean's RBI single. Sophomore Evan Greco pushed the second run of the inning across with a single up the middle and senior Jon Lewerke tallied the final RBI of the game, 7-3.
Junior Shane Murphy scattered 11 hits in his eight innings of work. He earned the victory and struck out four batters. Trevor Hall earned the save after not letting any runs score in the ninth while inheriting runners in scoring position.
Jester led the game with four hits and three RBIs.
GAME TWO: UW-Platteville 0, UW-La Crosse 2
Sophomore Mike Boushley pitched another gem for the Pioneers but without any run support suffered the loss. He fanned eight batters while throwing a complete-game five-hitter.
Boushley gave up a solo home run in the second and then an error in the third helped the Eagles score another run in the third, 2-0.
The Pioneers had their chances to score as the left on 12 runners on and out hit the UWL nine to five.
UW-Platteville and UWL will be back at it on Sunday with their doubleheader starting at noon.
