The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 14 UW-Stevens Point, 5-4 and 11-1 on Saturday afternoon in Stevens Point.
The Pioneers (11-28, 7-17 WIAC) were coming off their first doubleheader sweep of the Pointers since 1996 and looked to win its final regular season WIAC series. Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, UW-Platteville had already plated a run on a RBI single to cut the deficit to one. Next, after a walk, the Pointers' Ryan Iverson was called for a balk to move the tying run to third and go-ahead run to second. Then, UW-Stevens Point got a strike out to end the game.
The Pointers (27-13, 15-9 WIAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second and answered with three runs of their own in the sixth take a 5-3 lead in game one. UW-Stevens Point starter Brad Stroik held the Pioneers to five hits in a seven inning stint to raise his record to 5-1. Iverson picked up his fourth save, pitching the ninth inning for the winners.
UW-Platteville starter Shane Murphy pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (all earned), four hits, struck out four in the loss. Grant Oldenburg pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out one in his final Pioneer outing. Kevin Fessler led the Pioneers with two hits in the defeat, including a RBI single in the ninth.
In the nightcap, UW-Stevens Point jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first inning en route to the 11-1, seven inning win over the Pioneers. The Pointers sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring two on a double by Justin Jirschele and two more on a Jimmy Coady home run. As the offense came alive, the pitching picked up where the offense left off. UW-Stevens Point starting pitcher Mex Frederick held the Pioneers to four hits, allowing just one run and striking out five in the win.
The Pioneers plated their only run in the seventh when Topher Scheeler drove in Levi Ney, who had doubled to start the inning.
UW-Platteville will close out its season on Sunday at 6 p.m. when they travel to Stampfl Field in Verona to face Edgewood College.
