Pioneers name athletes of the week, Herbrand earns WIAC honors

Men's Cross Country - Kyle Herbrand, Junior, (Dane, Wis./Sauk Prairie) - Herbrand won the UW-Oshkosh Open by a 19-second margin and a time of 27:05. Herbrand held back during the first few miles before pressing in the middle portion of the race. He passed and pulled away from the leader in the fourth mile and cruised to the finish. This was Herbrand's first collegiate cross country win. For his efforts Herbrand was named the WIAC Athlete of the Week.

Volleyball - Offense - Kielyn Kapugi, Freshman, (Sun Prarie, Wis.), Outside Hitter - In their lone match of the week against Finlandia Kapugi hit a perfect 1.000 recording a kill on all eight of her attempts. Her eight kills were a match high as the Pioneers rolled to a 25-14, 25-13, 25-9 victory. She also collected a match high three service aces and added four digs and two assists.

Football - Offense - Mark Johnson, Junior (Johnston, Iowa), Wide Receiver - Johnson finished the day with 11 catches for 225 yards and two touchdowns as UW-Platteville beat UW-Eau Claire 34-14. The Pioneers were up 14-0 late in the second quarter when Johnson connected on his first touchdown of the day with a 72-yard touchdown reception to put the Pioneers up 21-0 at halftime. After a late surge by the Blugolds to bring the score to 28-14, Johnson grabbed an 18-yard touchdown to push the Pioneers to a 34-14 win. The 225 receiving yards is the second most in UW-Platteville history, and is Johnson's third 150+ yard game this season.

Football - Defense - Chandler Crary, Senior (St. Charles, Ill./Burlington Central), Linebacker - Crary finished the day with 10 total tackles including seven solo, 3.5 tackles for loss, and a sack for 10 yards as UW-Platteville beat UW-Eau Claire 34-14. Crary stalled a Blugolds drive by getting a sack for a 10 yard loss on a third down in the second quarter to keep them from scoring before half. Crary also had 3.5 tackles for losses that gave the Pioneer defense the upper hand throughout the game, and helped UW-Platteville to a 6-1 overall record and a 3-1 conference record to keep them in second place.

Women's Cross Country - Brenna Kautz, Freshman, (Port Washington, Wis.) - Kautz finished third at the UW-Oshkosh Open with a time of 25:47. The time was a 5-second personal best and it was the highest finishing place in her collegiate cross country season debut. |
