Pioneer Volleyball sweeps Loras in home opener
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Volleyball team defeated Loras in straight sets on Tuesday night in the team's first home game of the season. The Pioneers improve to 3-2 on the season.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Volleyball team defeated Loras in straight sets 27-25, 25-23, 25-20 on Tuesday night in front of a large home crowd. The Pioneers improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Pioneers had a slow start to the match and fell behind 7-2 to start the set before settling down and eventually tie the game at 17-17. Loras had set point at 24-22 but the Pioneers rallied to score three consecutive points and ultimately win 27-25. The Pioneers held the Duhawks to a .114 hitting percentage on the night.
As a team the Pioneers hit .208 and had big nights from senior Katie Jones and sophomore Paige Mertens. Jones hit .500 with seven kills on just 12 swings while Mertens had nine kills and hit .280. Sophomore CJ Johnson ran the offense as the 5-1 setter and finished with 31 assists, three service aces and two kills.
Sophomores Olivia Kudronowicz and Lita Solbrig added nine and seven kills, respectively. Kudronowicz also had three service aces.
The Pioneers defense was led by freshman Stephanie Kalinowski who had 18 digs of the teams 38 total digs.
Next week the Pioneers host Carroll on Wednesday, September 11th at 7 pm on Bo Ryan Court for Professor Appreciation Night.
