Pioneers go the distance for win

December 10, 2005

UW-Platteville, which entered Saturday's game last in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in three-point shooting, exploded for 12 long-range bombs in beating UW-River Falls 63-61 Saturday night in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers, who had been connected on just 23.2 percent in their first eight games, knocked down 12 of 23 three-point shots (52.2 percent) for the key conference victory.

All of those three-point shots were needed, as the Falcons had a chance to steal the win at the end. After a Pioneer missed free throw with six seconds to play, the Falcons' Miranda Biteler missed her own three-point attempt, as the ball rimmed out as the buzzer sounded.

The Pioneers improved to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the WIAC, while dropping the Falcons to 4-5, 2-2.

Six different Pioneers made three-point baskets, including three each by Kendall Christian and Michelle Hardyman.

Hardyman's final three-point basket gave the Pioneers a 63-56 lead with 2:18 remaining. She led the Pioneers with 11 points, while Holly Kaiser had 10 points and six assists. Senior point guard Emily Adrian saw her first action of the year since being injured in the season opener and made both of her three-point attempts in 21 minutes of play.

Traci Reimann led the Falcons with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Jana Benitz had 13 points, and Melanie Preiner added 10. The Falcons scored 36 points in the paint, compared to 14 for the Pioneers.
