Pioneers stun Titans

January 3, 2006

The UW-Platteville women's basketball team began the new year by breaking an old habit.

The Pioneers beat UW-Oshkosh 50-49 Tuesday for their first win in Williams Fieldhouse over the Titans since 1990.

The Pioneers used a 14-0 second-half run to turn a 28-26 deficit into a 40-26 advantage and end their 15-game home skid to the Titans. More important, the win lifted the Pioneers to 3-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, one-half game behind UW-La Crosse for first place. The Pioneers and Titans are now tied for second place behind the Eagles, who play at UW-Stout Wednesday.

Holly Kaiser scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Liz Tesch added 16 points, and Rachel Korth scored 10 for the Pioneers, now 7-5 overall.

Kaiser scored seven points during that 14-0 run in which UWO was scoreless for 5:30.

The Titans climbed back within 46-42 with 3:34 to play on Brittany Herrick's layup but could get no closer than that until the final second. Kelly O'Keef drained a long three-pointer with 0.5 to play, but the Pioneers inbounded the ball for the win.

O'Keef and Shannon Eggers each scored 12 while Becky Knapp added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Titans, now 9-4.

The Titans came into the game as the top shooting club in the WIAC, while the Pioneers were the top defensive unit. UWP held the visitors to 36 percent from the field and held a 40-28 advantage on the boards. Korth hauled in eight rebounds, including five on the offensive end.

The Pioneers hit the road for their next two games, playing at UW-Superior Saturday at 1 p.m. and at UW-Whitewater Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
