UW-Platteville Loses to UW-Whitewater, 66-55
Following a put-back attempt by junior Jordan Johnson that cut the deficit to two, visiting UW-Whitewater outscored the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s basketball team by an 11-2 margin en route to a 66-55 win on Wednesday night at Bo Ryan Court.
The Warhawks (11-4, 3-3 WIAC) were led by the inside play of Courtney Kumerow, who scored 20 points as UW-Whitewater outscored the Pioneers by a 36 to 20 margin on points in the paint. Kumerow was joined in double figures by Mary Merg, who added 13 in the win.
The Pioneers (6-10, 2-5 WIAC) landed three players in double digits with Ashley Henry scoring a team-high 12 points along with Danielle Hopkins and Kim Wellnitz, who added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Johnson put-back attempt with 5:15 to play cut the UW-Whitewater lead to 55-53. On the ensuing possession, UW-Whitewater and Kumerow got a second-chance basket to stretch the lead to four.
The Pioneers were down by nine, 53-44 with 8:38 to play, before they scored seven unanswered points to cut the deficit to two, 53-51. In the run, Hopkins hit a 3 pointer and Ashley Mulholland and Johnson hit a jumper for UW-Platteville. Both teams exchanged baskets; however, two would be as close as the Pioneers would get.
Down the stretch, the WIAC leader in free-throw percentage - UW-Whitewater made seven of eight free throws to seal the win.
The Pioneers will next be in action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 when they travel to UW-Stevens Point for a 7 p.m. matchup.
