Pioneers sweep Buena Vista, Roughen breaks strikeout record
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Junior Taylor Roughen set a new single-game school record Friday, tallying 15 strikeouts in the 6-0 victory over Buena Vista University at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex. The Pioneers (15-3) completed the sweep of the Beavers (7-12) with a 7-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Junior Taylor Roughen set a new single-game school record Friday, tallying 15 strikeouts in the 6-0 victory over Buena Vista University at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex. The Pioneers (15-3) completed the sweep of the Beavers (7-12) with a 7-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Roughen (10-1) broke the record while pitching her seventh complete game of the season. In addition to striking out 15 of 29 batters faced, Roughen walked just one and allowed seven hits in the shutout.
In the opener, sophomore Kate Davis singled up the middle in the bottom of the first to drive in the first run of the day. The Pioneers added a run in the second and fourth innings before bringing in three more in the bottom of the sixth behind two singles and a fielder's choice with bases loaded to jump out to the 6-0 lead.
Two sacrifice flies in the bottom of the first gave the Pioneers an early 2-0 run to open the second game of the doubleheader. Senior Danielle Trumbo doubled through the left side in the fourth to bring in a third run in the fourth. Trumbo scored quickly when senior Kendall Drake stepped up to the plate next and hit an inside the park homerun to the left field fence.
Freshman Kaitlin Jesberger drove in two more insurance runs in the fifth off a two-RBI single. The Beavers scored four runs in the seventh to cut the Pioneers' lead to 7-4 by the end of the day.
Sophomore Carlie Jo Brownlee (4-2) captured the win and pitched the first 5.2 innings, striking out four, walking none and allowing three hits and no runs.
As a team, the Pioneers tallied six stollen bases in the double header.
The Pioneers return to action and the UW-Platteville Softball Complex on Wednesday, April 3 when they host Augustana at 4 and 6 p.m.
