Pioneers fall to Hamline and Gustavus Adolphus
Tucson, AZ – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team fell in back to back games Sunday against Hamline University (5-1) and Gustavus Adolphus (7-6).
Tucson, AZ – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team fell in back to back games Sunday against Hamline University (5-1) and Gustavus Adolphus (7-6).
In game one against Hamline, the Pioneers totaled four hits off 22 at bats to Hamline's 10 off 30.
Hamline's Alex Molloy pitched the complete game without a single strikeout and gave up four hits accompanied by two walks. Ashton Hoeppner (1-3) pitched all seven for the Pioneers and tallied four strikeouts, five walks, and had five earned runs against.
UW-Platteville moved to 2-5 overall while Hamline improved to 6-3 overall with the victory in game one.
In game two, a three-run late comeback in the bottom of the sixth gave the Gusties the one-run lead that would hold to the end.
In the nail biter of a game, both teams tallied three runs in the first inning. UW-Platteville took a commanding 6-3 lead with two runs in the top of the fourth and one run scored in the fifth, but the Gusties came back from behind with one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to seal the deal.
Rachel Martin had team highs with two doubles, two RBIs, one run scored, and a stolen base. Haili Cota and Shannon Gaul each added two hits and one RBI.
Abby Burns (1-2) pitched a near-complete game and struck out four, gave up eight hits, and walked two while the Gusties' pitching combined for four strikeouts as well, nine hits, and two walks.
Overall, the Pioneers fall to 2-6 with the loss while the Gusties improve to 7-5.
UW-Platteville has an off-day on Monday and will return to action on Tuesday in Tucson with games scheduled against Texas-Dallas and Buena Vista University.
