Bio

Koenig heads into his second year as the Director of Soccer for the 2022 season with young talented teams that are looking to build off last year's success.

Koenig took over the helm of Pioneer soccer in 2021 as the Director of Soccer which includes both NCAA Division III men's and women's soccer programs.

During Koenig’s first season as Director of Soccer the men’s team finished with an impressive 13-5-2 record. During the season the team had its longest unbeaten streak in program history at 14 games. Other team accomplishments included Jack Gentilli earning Third Team All-Region honors and being named Co-Wisconsin Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, Chase Werner earned All-Wisconsin 2nd Team, Konrad Ziaja earned All-Wisconsin Honorable Mention and Lucas Schoeneberg also earned All-Wisconsin Honorable Mention.

Koenig took the women’s team in 2021 to an overall record of 9-6-3. During the season the team had the best start in program history and went undefeated for the entire month of September. In addition – the team was ranked for the first time in program history. Other team accomplishments included Amber Lueder earning First Team All-WIAC honors and Annalise Spindle being named to the All-WIAC Sportsmanship Team.

The 2019 season was Koenig’s first as the head coach of the Pioneer Men’s Soccer program. The team played the fifth hardest strength of schedule in the North Region in 2019 while going 8-8-3. Team accomplishments included Jack Gentilli being named Newcomer of the Year for All-Wisconsin, in addition to Nathan Miller and Tyler Gilmore earning Second-Team All-Wisconsin. Miller also earned United Soccer Coaches Association All-Region Honor. Miller broke the programs shutout record with 22 in his career.

Koenig, the 11th coach in Pioneer program history, served on the North Regional Advisory Committee for the NCAA, a committee which determines NCAA Tournament Selections, and is on the United Soccer Coaches North Region Rankings Committee.

He joined the Pioneer staff after coming from Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. In his first (2017) season with the Stars, Koenig helped Dominican to win its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament championship since 2013 and first appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer national tournament for the first time since 2014. In the 2018 season, Dominican once again returned to the NCAA Division III tournament after winning the NACC tournament championship for the second year in a row and advanced to the NCAA Division III second round of the tournament. He recruited and coached NACC Defensive Player of the Year, NACC Offensive Player of the Year, NACC Freshmen of the Year, three All-Central Region Selections, USC All-American, COSIDA Academic All-American and 17 All-NACC Selections.

Koenig served as an assistant coach at Loras College in Dubque, Iowa prior to Dominican and coached both the men's and women's soccer teams. With the soccer programs, Koenig helped Loras to Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) in both men's and women's soccer including a NCAA Division III National Tournament second round appearance with the women. Throughout his time, he coached on the men’s side six All-IIAC Selections, Three NSCAA All-North Selections, NSCAA All-American, and NSCAA

Scholar All-American. The women’s side featured IIAC Offensive MVP, five all-IIAC Selections, two All-North Region selections, and a Scholar All-American.

His other coaching experience includes head boys’ soccer coach at Wahlert Catholic High School and head women’s lacrosse at Loras College. From 2013-2016, Koenig helped develop the Wahlert Catholic boys' soccer program, earning a Class 2A third-place finish in the Iowa state tournament in 2016 while coaching a total of twenty all-conference athletes along the way.

During his collegiate soccer career at Loras College, Koenig was a two-time captain which lead the Program to its first National Championship appearance. Koenig played a significant role in three final four appearances, a Sweet Sixteen finish and national runner-up finish. He was a two-time Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American as well as a NSCAA Scholar All-American, both awards combining his academic and athletic success with the Duhawks. Koenig was twice recognized as an All-IIAC selection and NSCAA All-North Region First Team. The team amassed a record of 77-12-7 in his four years including four regular season conference titles and three conference tournament titles.

Koenig's high school career at Wahlert Catholic consisted of an Iowa State Championship, two state runner-up finishes, and a third-place finish in soccer. He earned high school NSCAA Academic All-American, Four Time All-State, Four Time First-Team All-MVC, Four Time All-Tournament Team, and All-Tournament Team Captain. He also was a basketball and football athlete at Wahlert Catholic. Earning honors as a running back and kicker in the MVC.

Koenig earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting from Loras College and a master’s in Athletic Administration from Coker College.

Koenig and his wife, Shannon, are parents to daughter Kathleen, Landon and Baby #3 in December/ January and have both grown up in the tri-state area.
