Pioneers fall to #5 UWSP

Fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point used a 15-2 scoring run spanning both halves to pull away from UW-Platteville 78-56 Wednesday on UWP's Bo Ryan Court.

The game was tied at 36 when the Pointers scored the final six points of the first half, taking a 42-36 lead into the locker room. UWSP then opened the second half with a 9-2 spurt for a 51-38 advantage and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.

The Pointers remained tied atop the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with UW-Whitewater at 12-3 with one game remaining. UWSP, 21-3 overall, plays at UW-La Crosse Saturday. The Warhawks play host to UW-Superior.

UW-Platteville dropped to 13-11, 7-8 and into fifth place in the WIAC. The top six teams make the post-season tournament, and the Pioneers will look to clinch a spot Saturday when they play host to UW-River Falls at 6 p.m.

Scott Hoelzel scored 18 points, while Jared Jenkins added 1, and Matt Moses 16 for the Pointers, who made 60 percent (30-50) of their shots.

Curt Hanson had 15, Mike Shaw 14, Shane Kieler 12, and Eric Wall 11 for the Pioneers, who made 52 percent in the first half but just 26 percent in the second. The first half featured seven ties and eight lead changes, with the Pioneers' last advantage at 33-31.

The Pioneers will salute seniors Allan Ballweg, Andrew Brown, Connor Finley, Hanson, and Shaw prior to Saturday's game.

Hanson moved into fifth place on the Pioneer career scoring list with 1,477 points.
