Pioneers battle the Falcons

Curt Hanson scored 22 points, and Nick Allen, Shane Kieler, and Mike Shaw each scored 16, leading UW-Platteville to its first conference road win, 79-65 at UW-River Falls Saturday.

Hanson (5-6) and Shaw (4-11) combined for nine three-point baskets for the Pioneers, who improved to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Coach Jeff Gard's club climbed into a tie for third-place with UW-La Crosse heading into Wednesday's showdown with co-leader UW-Whitewater. The Pioneers and Warhawks meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Bo Ryan Court on "Orange Out" Night. All fans are encouraged to wear orange for this rivalry game.

The Pioneers led 39-35 at the half, then opened the second period with a 14-6 run for a 53-41 advantage. The Falcons crept within seven at 55-48, but Hanson and Shaw nailed back-to-back three-point shots, igniting a 12-2 run for a 67-50 lead. Another Hanson trey gave UWP its largest advantage, 75-55, with 4:14 remaining.

Eric Wall added seven points and six rebounds, while Allen also had six boards. Freshman Rob Stallion, in his second start, added five rebounds.

Jontae Koonkaew scored 16 points, and Wade Guerin had 15 for the Falcons, who fell to 8-9, 2-6.
