Pioneers out-gun Titans

Curt Hanson, Eric Wall, and Mike Shaw combined for 65 points, leading visiting UW-Platteville to a 83-69 win over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night.

Hanson made 7-9 shots from the field and scored 24 points; Wall made 6-11 and scored 21; and Shaw was a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line for 21 points. The Pioneers, who led from start to finish, improved to 12-8 overall and 6-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Titans fell to 9-11, 4-8.

Shaw made a three-point basket 27 seconds into the contest, and then with the Pioneers leading 7-6, scored five straight points for a 12-6 advantage. UWP led 41-30 at the half, and the Titans came no closer than eight, very early in the second half. UWO's Greg Schrimpf made a three-point shot to open the half, but the Pioneers rolled off the next eight points for a 49-33 bulge. Hanson and Wall each had four points during that spurt.

D.J. Marsh led the Titans with 25 points, and Cory Wittwer added 21, giving the game five 20-plus scorers.

The Pioneers dropped in 33 of 37 free-throw attempts, good for 89.2 percent. They also made 22-38 from the field (57.9 percent), including 6-11 three-point baskets.

Coach Jeff Gard's club moved into a tie for third-place in the WIAC race with UW-La Crosse. The Pioneers face the second trip on their three-game road swing, playing at UW-Eau Claire Saturday at 5 p.m.
