Anderson holds off Pioneers

November 24, 2009

Anderson University held off UW-Platteville 65-62 Tuesday, spoiling the Pioneers' home opener on the refurbished Bo Ryan Court.

The visitors from Indiana led the final 9:49, but never by more than six points. UWP was within one or two points on eight occasions during that final span, but never was able to grab the lead.

Ty Riddle made one of two free throws with 21 seconds left for a 63-60 lead. The Pioneers closed the gap to 63-62 when Nick Allen cut back-door and took an assist from Curt Hanson for a layup. With 10 seconds left, Phil Hogan made both free throws for a 65-62 Ravens lead.

According to Anderson Sports Information Director Justin Bates, it was the third consecutive game the Ravens led by three with 10 seconds left and the third time they chose to foul over let the opponent attempt a game-tying shot. The strategy worked for the third time, as Hogan fouled Hanson in the backcourt with six seconds remaining. Hanson missed the free throw, but Eric Wall grabbed the offensive rebound. Hanson's pressured three-point shot was just off the mark, and Mike Shaw could not get off another three from the corner before the buzzer sounded.

Hanson scored a game-high 21 points for the 2-2 Pioneers, who led 31-25 at the half. Shaw added 15 points, and Allen 14 for the Pioneers, who made 53.3 percent from the field. Wall led all rebounders with nine, including four on the offensive end.

Hogan led the 3-0 Ravens with 13 points, while Andrew Bowman, Andrew Jones, and Brock Morrison all scored 12. Anderson shot 56.3 percent from the field, including 64 percent in the second half.

The Pioneers play host to the Pioneer Ford/Frito Lay Thanksgiving Classic Saturday and Sunday. Ripon faces Pacific Lutheran Saturday at 6 p.m., followed by UWP vs. Simpson. On Sunday, Ripon and Simpson play at 1 p.m., and the Pioneers face Pacific Lutheran.
