Pioneers win in St. Louis

UW-Platteville used a strong second-half surge to defeat Webster University 65-50 Saturday in the Webster/Washington U. Tournament at Grant Gymnasium in St. Louis.

The Pioneers broke open a 37-31 game with a 14-2 run and led in double digits the rest of the way. All-America center Jeff Skemp scored eight of those 14 points during the decisive run.

UW-Platteville improved to 3-0 overall, while Webster lost its first game after two wins.

Sophomore guard Curt Hanson scored 14 points, including 4-7 from beyond the three-point arc, to lead the Pioneers, while junior forward Kyle Tetschlag had 13 points and Skemp finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Coach Paul Combs' squad forced 19 Webster turnovers, converting them into 19 points. UWP held the hosts to 34.8 percent in the field in the second half after taking a 34-26 halftime advantage.

Brad Robinson led the Gorlocks with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Pioneers face Wash. U., the nation's top-ranked team Sunday at 2 p.m. The Bears suffered a 66-60 loss to fifth-ranked Augustana in the St. Louis tournament Saturday.
